Murphy, one of the nation’s most influential criminal defense attorneys, is no stranger to prison.

He and his former partner William Sullivan have been at the center of the Bundy case since the two were first questioned as part of the probe. But, after an initial period of investigation, the murder case fell apart as the police investigation was eventually compromised by multiple sources of corruption and misconduct.

In the end, the defense team was forced to abandon the case against Bundy and move on to a much more significant matter, that of his son. But, at the time it made matters more difficult for both sides.

“We got to say that the cases [against Bundy and his son] were the toughest cases to defend in the history of the entire country, and in the history of Minnesota in particular,” a source close to Murphy told RadarOnline.

“It was the hardest thing we ever had to do in our lives,” said Murphy. “It was a real challenge, and we did it with the best of intentions. If anything there is no way we can be blamed for the outcome of the case.”

During the trial, Murphy was portrayed as something of a hero, although many of the jurors found him somewhat off putting, which could have possibly affected how they saw the defense case.

What we do know is that Murphy did a masterful job defending his client, who eventually pleaded guilty to sexual abuse charges only to be released days before his scheduled trial date.

Murphy represented Bundy for six months before being replaced by defense attorney Mark F. Hansen, who handled Bundy’s trial. Hansen was replaced by another attorney named Peter A. Blatt, but they were recently forced to abandon the case against Bundy, one of the most serious in the history of American criminal law.

The defense team was left with a lot of questions to answer. The main ones being:

How come the government didn’t find the alleged crimes were committed by Bundy
